Ukraine has launched more than 1,000 drones towards Russia in one of its largest aerial offensives since the war began, targeting oil facilities and other critical infrastructure.
Reports indicate that Ukrainian strikes sparked fires at an oil export terminal and a depot in St Petersburg, while Russian authorities claimed to have intercepted or destroyed 1,015 Ukrainian drones.
In retaliation, Russia launched attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving tens of thousands of households without electricity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of continuing to target energy facilities despite a ceasefire initiative announced by United States President Donald Trump on October 11.
Zelenskyy said Russia had carried out dozens of attacks on Ukraine’s energy, oil and gas sectors since the announcement.
Meanwhile, Trump has defended his decision to delay additional sanctions against Russia, saying he wants to keep diplomatic negotiations open.
The latest escalation comes amid ongoing efforts to end the war, which has caused widespread destruction and civilian casualties in both countries.
